East Quincy Avenue
Englewood, CO
The 10.7 acres that comprise this Englewood, CO landscape offer dramatic views of the rolling terrain and adjacent Rocky Mountains. The property receives less than 17 inches of rain a year, which necessitates a plant palette accustomed to a more arid climate. To augment the water budget, OvS deepened an existing pond, which enabled adequate water to sow an extensive meadow. Native shortgrass species were established first. A year later, drifts of grassland wildflowers brought hues of purple, blue, and white. New trees frame views and hide other interventions in the landscape, such as a pool, tennis court, and adjacent homes. Plantings closer to the home are irrigated, but the meadow, now established, is allowed to go dormant with the seasonal summertime drought. The garden transforms into warm golds and russets in this personal prairie from late summer through winter.
