Oehme, van Sweden & Associates, Inc. is commissioned to redesign this historic urban plaza, which is a busy neighborhood crossroads, the centerpiece of a historic community, and host to the Eastern Market Metro Station.  The plan opens visual connections between various plaza parcels, resolves traffic conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles, and welcomes residents and visitors to the unique amenities of this historic neighborhood.

Nearby Eastern Market, from which the plaza and the Metro Station derive their names, is a thriving survivor of Washington's nineteenth century neighborhood markets.  The Capitol Hill neighborhood that surrounds the plaza boasts a 200-year history as one of the nation's largest historic districts (more than 8,000 historic buildings).  The plaza is a gateway to "Barracks Row Main Street" (Eighth Street SE from the plaza to M Street), a burgeoning center of shops, restaurants, and offices.  The Marine Barracks, home of the United States Marine Band and the Marine Commandant's historic 1806 home, also faces the street.  "Main Street" terminates at the M Street SE entrance to the Navy Yard, a military installation that was founded on the nearby banks of the Anacostia River in 1798.
