Personnel Oehme, van Sweden & Associates' staff consists of twenty-three landscape architects, two urban planners, and ten technical support personnel. The staff's cumulative professional experience totals more than 250 years of work, almost half of which is work for the firm. Twenty-two staff members hold degrees in landscape architecture or urban planning, most at the masters level; twelve are members of the American Society of Landscape Architects, including Mr. Oehme, Mr.van Sweden, and Ms. Brady who are Fellows of the Society; two are charter members of the American Institute of Certified Planners; and ten hold state registrations in landscape architecture. Founding Principals Wolfgang Oehme, FASLA Wolfgang Oehme's career began in his native Germany where he apprenticed at Bitterfeld Horticultural School and then studied landscape architecture at the University of Berlin. After graduating in 1954 he worked in Europe until 1957 and then moved to the United States. He worked for the Baltimore County Department of Parks and then practiced independently before founding a partnership with James van Sweden in 1977. Mr. Oehme's planting philosophies, especially his creative use of herbaceous perennials and ornamental grasses, are definitive of the New American Garden style. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects and recipient of many distinguished professional awards. James A. van Sweden, FASLA James van Sweden earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Michigan in 1960. He then studied landscape architecture at the University at Delft, the Netherlands, and served as Assistant Town Planner for Amsterdam. Upon return to the United States in 1963 he became a partner in charge of urban design and landscape architecture for Marcou, O'Leary and Associates in Washington, D.C. He practiced there until founding his partnership with Mr. Oehme in 1977. Mr. van Sweden's multidisciplinary design talents encompass architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design. He is the author of distinguished books about gardening and maintains an active schedule of related lectures. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects and recipient of many prestigious awards.
Principals Sheila A. Brady, FASLA Sheila Brady holds a Masters of Landscape Architecture degree from Harvard University's Graduate School of Design and a Bachelor of Arts degree from George Washington University /Corcoran School of Art. She has taught at the University of Virginia, University of Pennsylvania, and George Washington University. She is a registered landscape architect and a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects. She joined the firm in 1987. Lisa E. Delplace, ASLA Lisa Delplace joined the firm in 1988 after graduating from the University of Michigan with a Master of Landscape Architecture degree. She also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Park Planning and Design from Michigan State University. Her work has been honored with local and national awards, and she has been published in respected books and periodicals. She is a registered landscape architect.
Eric
D. Groft, ASLA Eric Groft is a graduate of the University of Virginia where he earned a Master of Landscape Architecture degree in 1984. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in geography and environmental science from Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania. His experience includes teaching and lecturing. He is a registered landscape architect and a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects. He joined the firm in 1986. Charles E. Turner, AICP Charles Turner holds a Master of Regional Planning degree from the University of North Carolina and a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Arkansas. He has held senior level positions with prominent community development and urban design firms, including Marcou O'Leary and Associates where he and Mr. van Sweden were colleagues. He is a charter member of the American Institute of Certified Planners and a member of the American Planning Association. He joined the firm in 1989.
