The Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville

.

Located adjacent to Thomas Jefferson’s historic Academical Village, the

newly transformed Alderman Library Quadrangle was built as an “on structure” green roof over the Special Collections Library. Occupying 58,000 square feet within two underground floors, the below-grade library is evidenced only by the ground level skylights integrated within planting beds on the quad. Redesigned as a pedestrian promenade, the quadrangle is aligned with the axis of the Beaux Arts facades of the Alderman Library and the McIntyre School of Commerce. Completed in 2004, the landscape design responds to the historically-sensitive nature of the site

and is ADA accessible.
